USCA (November 1, 2007) - The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) President Jon Wooster made the following statement regarding President Bush’s nomination of former North Dakota Governor Edward Schafer as Secretary of Agriculture.

"Governor Schafer’s resume reflects vast experience in areas critical to U.S. cattle producers. His roots in North Dakota and his service as Governor of that state certainly give him a keen insight into the challenges that America’s independent ranchers and our rural economies face today.

"As we move forward with the new farm bill, it is extremely important for the U.S. Department of Agriculture to have firm leadership at the helm and an individual who is in touch with and understands the agriculture industry, as well as an individual who will provide transparency and will open widely the door of communication so that all sectors of the industry have a voice in the policy and rule-making processes.

"If Governor Schafer is confirmed, the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association pledges to work diligently with his administration in an effort to advance the interests of cattle producers in a dignified and reasoned manner.

Patrick Becker, President of the Independent Beef Association of North Dakota (I-BAND), a USCA affiliate concurred saying, "If Governor Schafer is confirmed he will take the reins of USDA at a critical time, not only for producers but for the agency as well. We are extremely hopeful that Governor Schafer will work to continually build producer trust and faith in the agency charged with regulation and promotion of our industry. We need a leader with steadfast convictions and a willingness to listen, and I believe Governor Schafer is that leader."

Established in March 2007, USCA is committed to assembling a team to concentrate efforts in Washington D.C. to enhance and expand the cattle industry's voice on Capitol Hill. For membership forms and other information visit www.uscattlemen.org
