USCA (July 3, 2008) - The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) has teamed up with South Dakota Beefman Tom Connelley to become an official sponsor of the Cowboy Capital Challenge, in which one community will be named America’s Cowboy Capital of the Year. Stephenville, Texas, which claims more cowboys per square foot than any other community in America, is being challenged for the title by Oakdale, California, home of the Oakdale Cowboy Museum.

Towns competing in the challenge to become the Cowboy Capital of the Year are selling $10 tickets for a chance to win a side of U.S. born and raised beef provided by the South Dakota Beefman. Tom Connelley, president and owner of South Dakota Beefman, heard about the Cowboy Capital Challenge and offered to provide a side of premium U.S. beef for each city’s winning ticket, supported by USCA. The community selling the most tickets will be designated the Cowboy Capital of the Year.

"The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association is a leading proponent of country of origin labeling (COOL) for beef," said Connelley. "The organization was key in getting the legislation passed during recent Farm Bill debates. Danni Beer, who chairs USCA’s COOL Committee, has been instrumental in the movement to label domestic beef as a U.S. product. Thanks to Danni and USCA, U.S. cattle producers will see their product labeled in retail cases very soon," Connelley stated.

"The Cowboy Capital Challenge is a natural partnership for USCA and the South Dakota Beefman because we believe in promoting U.S. beef and the consumer’s right to choose domestic product at the point of sale," continued Connelley. "I view this contest as the beginning of a nation wide campaign to promote U.S. beef. Chances are on sale now and I encourage everyone to participate."

Chances to win the approximately $1500 in U.S. born and raised beef are a $10 donation to designated non-profit organizations in Oakdale, California and Stephenville, Texas. All proceeds will support western heritage and cowboy-related events in both communities. Chances to win the sides of beef can be purchased at www.oakdalecowboymuseum.org or at www.stephenvilletexas.org. Information is also available at www.southdakotabeefman.com. Drawings will be held on July 26, 2008 in both communities during National Day of the American Cowboy celebrations.
