USCA (March 31, 2009) South Dakota ranchers and businesses showed tremendous support for the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) as two rollover calf sales were recently held at Faith Livestock and St. Onge Livestock. Over $8,000 was gathered between the two sales with USCA’s Director Emeritus Leo McDonnell and USCA’s Executive Vice President Jess Peterson attending the Faith sale and McDonnell attending the St. Onge sale.
"A very nice crowd was in attendance to listen to Jess and Leo," reported Scott Vance of Faith Livestock. “There are a lot of key issues affecting the industry, and attendees appreciated the update and the USCA action plan that Jess and Leo provided.”
“Faith had the first such rollover sale several years ago, and we are happy to carry on doing this to help fund a presence for ranchers in Washington DC,” said Gary Vance.
Justin Tupper of St. Onge Livestock stated, “Here in South Dakota we thrive on a competitive cattle market, and the proper legislative and regulatory policies help make this happen. We need USCA back in Washington, D.C. fighting each and every day for the cowman. Hosting rollover sales and enlisting the support of South Dakota cattle producers are critical in winning the everyday battles back in Washington.”
“On behalf of USCA, I want to thank the ranchers and main street businesses for coming out and raising $8,000 between the two events,” stated Leo McDonnell. “We also extend a special thanks to Tom Miller for donating the calf for the Faith Sale and Justin Tupper for donating the calf at St.Onge.”
“USCA is the only national organization solely for ranchers and independent feeders that maintains a full-time experienced person in DC," continued McDonnell, "and we are fortunate to have someone like Jess, who comes from a successful ranch family.”
“There are a host of issues that ranchers are going to face, and I can promise you every decision we make is based on what is best for U.S. ranchers and what they want for their business," explained Jess Peterson.
“The recent implementation of country of origin labeling (COOL) proves that ranchers can advance legislation and policy that makes a difference in cattle country. USCA has set its sights on using Beef Checkoff dollars to promote the new USA label. Plus USCA is committed to preventing the USDA from implementing its plan to increase meat imports from Argentina, and USCA is committed to preventing the implementation of a national, mandatory identification system. With the continued support from calf sales, ranchers will continue to win on the issues.” |
