USCA (August 24, 2010) - U. S. Cattlemen’s Association (USCA) Region VIII Director, Alan Sents, Kansas, will testify at the August 27 joint U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) competition workshop in Fort Collins, Colorado. The workshop will be held in the Lory Student Center, at 1101 Centre Avenue Mall, in Fort Collins.

The Fort Collins venue is the fourth in a series of five workshops intended to promote dialogue among interested parties and foster learning with respect to competition and regulatory issues in agriculture. The Fort Collins workshop will address beef, hog and other animal sectors. Anticipated discussions include concentration in livestock markets, buyer power and enforcement of the Packers and Stockyards Act (PSA).

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack are slated to provide opening remarks as well as participate in roundtable discussions with Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Christine Varney. Federal and state officials from Colorado have been invited to participate. Public testimony will be accepted and other panel discussions will include ranchers, academics, processors and other industry representatives.

"USCA is very pleased to have a seat at the table for these important livestock marketing discussions," noted Jon Wooster, USCA President. "Alan Sents is a respected Midwestern cattle feeder who has a keen understanding of how the erosion of competition and monopolization of markets has affected the cattle industry. Alan has traveled to Washington, DC numerous times to lobby on the issue of competition. The Fort Collins workshop is an excellent opportunity for policy-makers and regulators to hear about the plight of our markets and gain further knowledge about the policy changes needed."

Established in March 2007, USCA is committed to concentrating its efforts in Washington, DC to enhance and expand the cattle industry’s voice on Capitol Hill. USCA has a full-time presence in Washington, giving cattle producers across the country a strong influence on policy development. For more information go to www.uscattlemen.org.
