Jon Wooster, President: San Lucas, California

The Cow Boss is, well, the boss.  He’s the man who puts the entire operation into motion; he’s the anchor who sets an example for his crew to follow.   The Cow Boss is a wise business manager, who knows how to pull the best from the people who surround him by earning their trust and working right alongside them.

When USCA made the transition from dream to reality and the outfit was looking for a proven Cow Boss, all eyes turned to San Lucas, California and Jon Wooster.  When asked to take on the job, he  pulled his hat down tight, put both feet in the stirrups and took a deep seat.  The rest is history in the makin’.  Jon Wooster’s smilin’ eyes and strong handshake bespeak a man of experience, wisdom and calm, reasoned temperament.  He’s as articulate as they come and he’s smart...very smart.

Wooster was raised in Calaveras County California where his family raised cattle.  The cattle grazed in the Central Valley in winter and were moved to the summit of the Sierra Mountains for summer grazing.  When Jon graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo with a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, he went home to the family ranching operation.  In 1971 he married his wife, Jane.

In 1974, Jon and Jane leased a ranch and moved to Monterey County on the Central Coast of California.  During the ensuing thirty-three years, the Woosters have continued to build their cow-calf operation and added two sons to their family.  Unpredictable weather conditions sometimes cause them to run their calves to yearlings, and often they retain ownership through the feedlot to the packer level.  Their cowherd is a Beefmaster/Red Angus cross.

Over the past thirty years, Jon has been actively involved in local, state and national livestock producer organizations.  He is committed to the success of USCA and he believes the organization will enable the next generation to be profitable cattle producers.
